Flag Unfurling

All the flag designs by the children at Evergreen Heights school have been put on the Gym Wall at the Kearney Community Centre and will remain there until after Feb 16th. Anyone wishing to view them are most welcome. They are in 3 groups left to right, composites (1 per class from grades 1 - 8), individual student designs grades 7 and 8, and grades 1 to 6.

Some of the elements included by the students were the forests, the loon, blue for water, the name of the town and its incorporation date.  These elements, we felt, symbolize Kearney's past and its future; logging, past and present, tourism, the importance of our ecology. The final design has a loon rising out of the water and a rising sun to show that Kearney's future path is moving onward and upward. The student comment that "putting 2008 on the flag seemed like life was over", was also important and we decided not to include that date because we wanted the flag to show that Kearney has a bright future.

All of the children's designs were on display at the New year's Eve Gala and were up again for the Heritage Day Supper of February 16.  We had the flag unfurled for the first time that night. We heard forward to hearing the Evergreen Heights School student choir sing and met all Evergreen Heights School students and staff.

We thank the students for their important role in helping us to design the Kearney Flag for our Centennial.

A word from the Flag Designer:

Jeff:

We were so disappointed that we were not able to attend the celebrations yesterday. Steve Taunton sent along a couple of pictures of the

finished flag and it looks beautiful. I can't tell you how privileged I feel to have been a part of Kearney's 100th year celebration and to have the

opportunity to design something that will live on for a very long time. Thanks again for including me in this momentous occasion.

Sincerely,

Deborah Eaton

Centennial Tree Planting of Pink Flowering "Bare Root" Crab trees
bullet

One of our Centennial Projects is the planting of Pink Flowering "Bare Root" Crab trees throughout the town.

These will become known as our Centennial Trees. The goal is to help beautify Kearney by encouraging everyone to plant at least one of these trees on their property. Price per tree is: $35,00 each.

If you are interested in ordering one or more of these trees, please fill in the Order Sheet at the bottom of this newsletter and return it to the Town Office no later than April 1st, 2008. Advance payment by cheque or cash will be required.

You will be notified of the delivery date around May 24th depending on planting conditions.

The flowering Crabs arrived and have been distributed.  The Town will plant 4 trees at the Community Centre this evening, May 13, and hope to plant 3 each at McManus Beach, the town Dock, and Lions Park

Thank you for helping us to make this project a success. The Centennial Events Sub-Committee.

Adopt-A-Highway
bullet

May 3 The Adopt-A-Highway/Yard Cleanup event is sponsored by the Kearney Lions Club and is scheduled for May 3rd, 9:00 am - 12:00 noon.

bullet

Being Kearney's Centennial year we wanted this "clean-up" to be the best one we've have had in 100 years.

The Adopt-A-Highway/Pitch-In on Saturday, May 03, 2008 was a huge success, probably the best yet.

We had 36 registered participants and most of the Main Streets/Hwy 518 plus the Community Centre got a good cleaning. The weather held off and the Kearney Beavers were there.

On behalf of the Kearney Lions Club and the Town of Kearney, please accept our heartfelt thanks for making our Cleanup such a success.

Regards, Jeff Johnston
President, Kearney Lions Club
Mayor, Town of Kearney
