Spring is just around the corner
This will be a short newsletter. Everyone at KWEF decided to take a break this winter which is why our newsletter went quiet for a few months. We will be back to working on all our projects shortly. As usual winter has been reluctant to leave with temperatures see-sawing back & forth. Today the 19th of April is one of those days. Fresh snow overnight plus on and off flurries all day. You can see stubborn patches of skim ice remain on our lake in the photo above.
There is hope - the high this coming weekend is supposed to be 20 C ( 68 F). More of our migrating birds are back. I saw my first batch of butterflies bouncing around the yard and a recently awakened Wooly Bear caterpillar out for a stroll in the garden a few days ago. I guess it is time to take down our winter bird feeders.
Lake Partner (LPP) water sample kits have started arriving
For those of you enrolled in the LPP - if you don't get your sample kits shortly contact the co-ordinator in Dorset. You may have accidentally been taken off their list. If you have problems contacting them email stan.kwef@gmail.com and he will try to help.
Annual spring cleanup in Kearney
KWEF and the Kearney Lions work together on this project. We target the first two weeks in May for litter cleanup throughout our municipality. On Saturday May 7th the Lions encourage everyone to come out for a group effort at what we call "Ditch Cleaning," since that is where most of the litter seems to accumulate.
We will meet in the parking lot of the community centre between 8:30 and 9:00 am Saturday when we will assign areas to clean up. For those who can't come Saturday but would like to help with the cleanup during the first two weeks of May - please give me a call after May 1st at (705-636-9530) or email (stan.kwef@gmail.com).
We will have clear garbage bags available (supplied by the Town) and have a few "picker/grabbers" that we can loan out if you don't have one. The Town has also arranged for the Transfer Stations to accept roadside garbage at no charge during the first two weeks in May. They ask that you put recyclable items in a separate bag. Beer and liquor containers can be dropped off at Fetterleys Gas & Convenience in Kearney. Most of us find that five gallon plastic pails perform better than a plastic bag when you are working among bushes or brambles. The bag can become caught and torn on the bushes and also quickly becomes too heavy to lug around.
If you can manage two pails - use one for garbage and the other for recyclables & beer cans/bottles. Just transfer your collection to the bags periodically. If working near roads always be conscious of traffic, wear high visibility clothing or safety vests. Please be careful - we don't want anyone getting hurt.
We can all make the committment to not litter. Set an example for your children, friends and neighbours. Start by placing a small garbage container or bag in your car so that litter doesn't get tossed out the window. It can be a first small step in helping make our planet / environment a better place.
